Know Your Right Wing Speakers: Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson

“Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson is the most courageous, outspoken critic of the civil-rights establishment in America today … Character is the most important word in Rev. Peterson’s vocabulary.”

Or so reads Peterson’s bio on his own website. Indeed, there are few other words he uses with such frequency or so flagrantly as “character.” Insisting that it is not racism but lack of moral character that causes the problems of African-Americans, Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson proclaims himself “this generation’s Booker T. Washington.”

Rev. Jesse Lee PetersonAlthough he may not make history in quite the same way, there is no doubt that Peterson, like Washington, will be remembered for quotes that have raised the ire of much of the African American community. At the conservative student conference in summer 2005, well-documented by Campus Progress bloggers, Peterson played off the right-wing’s visceral hostility to the concept of reparations for slavery: “Instead of reparations,” Peterson proposed, “how ‘bout a free ticket back to Africa?”

Peterson wasn’t always a staunch right-winger. As he told The Nation magazine earlier this year, “I was born a Democrat but I had no values; it was anything goes, whatever you want to do, and that came from the black leadership, but I finally started to examine it for myself and I realized the Democratic platform was an anti-God, anti-values, anti-American platform.”

According to Peterson, who was born and raised on a plantation in Alabama, he moved to LA in 1968 and “started to listen to people from the NAACP, the Reverend Jackson, Louis Farrakhan and others.” Peterson describes this period of his life as a time of conflict for him, during which he was overwhelmed with anger toward white people. He blames this anger for his downward spiral into drug abuse and his reliance on the welfare system, until he had an awakening in 1990 when he discovered Jesus and Ronald Reagan, and their combined influence inspired him to form BOND, the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny. BOND was a small, poorly funded Christian center that held Sunday services, meetings and counseling both in person and over the phone. But it was enough to get Peterson on the radar of some important people – he started making TV appearances, and eventually bought himself some airtime on the radio in Englewood, California.

He was quickly picked up by the right and put in the spotlight to say the things their white leaders can’t get away with. He is a frequent critic of the Democratic Party, and claims that his former life as a welfare recipient makes him an expert on the vast failure that is the system: “The Democratic Peterson used us by giving us welfare and telling us it’s not our problem in order to get the votes. The Liberal Elite, both Black and White politicians do the same to us…They do not want Black people to be free at all.” Peterson is a frequent commentator on the punditry circuit on FOX, MSNBC and CNN and hosts a nationally syndicated radio talk show on the Information Radio Network. He is now a core featured speaker at such conservative confabs as the Conservative Political Action Conference and College Republican National Convention and additionally visits colleges between his radio broadcasts.

Peterson’s career has been defined by an enduring crusade against civil rights leaders. In addition to writing two books, From Rage to Responsibility: Black Conservative Jesse Lee Peterson and America Today (2000) and SCAM: How the Black Leadership Exploits Black America (2003) Peterson’s main media event was his annual “National Day of Repudiation of Jesse Jackson,” which ran for five years. But it wasn’t particularly national. Actually, it was limited to a street corner in Los Angeles as these amazing pictures from Peterson’s site will attest [1, 2]. A regular on Hannity & Colmes (surprise!), Peterson said earlier this year: “[Jesse Jackson] went to the White House under the pretense of counseling Bill Clinton who cheated on his wife. I believe they gave each other the high five.” (Hannity & Colmes, January 17, 2005)

Actually Peterson’s frequent appearances on Hannity & Colmes got fellow right winger Hannity into a bit of trouble, when he defended Peterson from criticism from the other guest, failing to disclose that he is on the board of Peterson’s organization, BOND. Not only that, he received an award from BOND: the Booker T. Washington Award.

In addition to regularly attacking Jesse Jackson, Peterson is also responsible for creating and maintaining “The Blacklist,” a record of Black celebrities who he has found to have done or said anything remotely political. Among the stars include Will Smith, Spike Lee, Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg, Harry Belafonte and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. He likens the list to an NAACP boycott and says he hopes the list will stop Americans from supporting irresponsible celebrities like Glover who had the gall to exclaim, “We must work to remove injustices that create terrorism.”

Equally “un-American” was P.Diddy for commenting that he believed we had to get Bush out of office. Of course, Peterson failed to remark on the fact that P.Diddy also challenged all those who didn’t agree with him to exercise their “right to go to the polls and represent [Bush].” That’s just the kind of irresponsible hogwash you’d expect from an “un-American” celebrity. Far be it from us to actually advocate participatory democracy.

Like Jesse Jackson and Will Smith, Peterson is known to publicly declare the need for Americans to take the issue of racism more seriously. The difference is that Peterson is referring to black racism of which whites are the victims. He sites various incidents where blacks allegedly lash out against whites, such as a case in which a white cop was gunned down chasing a black robbery suspect. The alleged suspect had earlier been accused of another shooting, but without any racial reference, indicating that he was simply a violent criminal, rather than a vehement anti-white racist as Peterson suggests.

Even with his admonition of supposed racism against whites, he has no qualms voicing his own prejudiced views on Muslims, and was quoted at the College Republican’s National Convention saying, “we now have Muslim folks moving in and they don’t like us… they want to kill us.”

That sort of nuanced understanding of the Democratic party extends to the African American community. On another appearance on Hannity & Colmes (surprise!), Alan Colmes asked: “You said blacks lack moral character. Is that your view of African-Americans?” How silly of Alan to think that Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson, a man of the African-American community, would fall for such a loaded question! Peterson deftly knocked that softball out of the park: “Not all blacks, Alan, but most.” (Hannity & Colmes, October 20, 2003). If that doesn’t satisfy your desire for the moral teachings of the good Reverend, turn to his latest book, Scam: How the Black Leadership Exploits Black America (2003), namely the chapter “Why Black Women are so Mean.”

——African-American Political Pundit says: Here are some quotes from Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson. This guy is a real moron!

Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson says:
“Most Black people are not honest and don’t like to work.”

“Most Black preachers aren’t called by God, they are called by their mommas.”

“Most Black preachers teach hatred of Israel.”

“Most Black people, not all, but most, like lies over truth.”

“A lot of Christians aren’t really Christians, especially Black ones.”

“When it comes to sex, you can’t trust a Black preacher.”

“Blacks who complain should be put back onto the plantation so that they would know how to work.”

“Most Black men are not worth anything.”

“Black preachers are racists”.

“The Year Of The Black Republican”

July 27, 2006

Source:http: Oliver

If you listened to the Republicans and the MSM you’d think every year was the “Year of the Black Republican”, because according to them someday sometime soon the party of Willie Horton is going to have somebody (anybody) to parade around in elected office besides J.C. Watts.

Of course, dovetailing with the Republican attempts to invalidate or deny the votes of black Americans, the GOP couldn’t get the black vote if they were handing out free money. Black Americans are simply not going to reward the party of Katrina, sluggish employment growth, and Trent “I Wish The Segregationists Had Won” Lott with their votes.

That’s why you have the spectacle of Maryland’s Michael Steele shucking and jiving because while he likes the dollah dollah bills the GOP blesses him with, he knows that he’s dead in the water if anyone puts two and two together about his Republicanism. Hence the attempt at a (sloppy) extreme makeover.

In Ohio, Ken Blackwell – the handpicked candidate of the religious right crazies – is down 20 points to Ted Strickland.

If this trend keeps up, I’m asking the GOP for another “Year of the Black Republican” two years from now. We Democrats would really appreciate it.

Israeli Apartheid

African-American Political Pundit says: As usual Bruce Dixon and the team at key in on critical issues that Bush, other opinion makers and a majority of the gutless Congressional Black Caucus fail to address: Israeli Apartheid.

Michael Steele’s bogus victimology

July 27, 2006

Source: Skeptical brotha

Michael Steele, Maryland’s Lt. Governor and favorite GOP black Trojan horse, is now claiming victim-hood because of his status as a Republican Senate candidate with $2 million in the bank in a bad GOP year. Only in the alternate universe that is the GOP Opportunity Society can anyone assisted by the sitting President of the United States and his minions Rove, Cheney, and Card in raising campaign cash from wealthy white folks be considered a victim. Bush was unpopular when he decided to run for the Senate. Bush was unpopular when he set up the fundraisers.  Bush is still unpopular all these months later. It hasn’t deterred him on his quest to be a Bush enabler in the U.S. Senate.

Aided in his quest to become a GOP Trojan horse are the upper echelons of the Democratic Party that organized themselves into a fund-raising juggernaut for Congressman Ben Cardin which effectively squeezed out the first candidate to enter the race to succeed Senator Sarbanes, Kweisi Mfume.  Black voters noticed that nobody prominent was helping Kweisi and they began to take a second look at Steele, a negro double agent if there ever was one.

On the one hand, there are the warm-and-fuzzy-feel-good issues of school choice and the faux examination the equity of capital punishment in Maryland. On the other, are the massive social service and education budget cuts the Ehrlich-Steele Administration imposes on the most vulnerable people.

A disproportionate share of these people are people of color. Those feel good public relations initiatives make it easy for Steele to look engaged in Policy while he actually uses his office to campaign for another and Governor Ehrlich uses his power to govern Maryland for the benefit of their mutual malevolent corporate benefactors.

The Ehrlich-Steele Administration has made draconion cuts to Medicaid in the last three fiscal years. According to the Maryland Budget and Tax Policy Institute, ”In FY 2004 and FY 2005 more than $250 million was cut from the Medicaid program. These cuts include:  Reducing payments to health care providers. Restrictions on length of stay in hospitals. Cuts in drug assistance programs for the elderly and non-Medicaid groups. Greater cost sharing for enrollees (i.e.,increased premiums and co-payments). Tighter controls on disease management Switching long term care support and services from fee-based to managed care. The cumulative effect of these cuts and this year’s $ 112 million dollar Medicaid cut is to reduce the access to medical care for the most economically insecure Marylanders.

The Ehrlich-Steele Administration also reduces funds availble for Higher Education and k-12 education in direct contravention to recent Maryland law.  The resentment over the treatment of Mfume and the lack of an African American running mate for Kathleen Kennedy Townsend has created an opening to black voters for the GOP to exploit.  44% of African Americans polled recently are open to an appeal by Steele for their vote. Sadly, middle class blacks are largely delusional on this score because all Steele can offer are opportunites to press the flesh and phony feel good campaign events that don’t have a damn thing to do with policy.  Steele has made substantial inroads into middle class black Maryland by pretending to care and pay attention to their inconseqential need for attention while the majority of black Marylanders suffer economically under the massive social service cuts imposed by Steele’s partner in crime.

It remains to be seen if this strategy will bear fruit in the end.  All I know is it ain’t hurting Steele in the least to try and seduce the black community into cutting its own throat by voting for him.

Our Troops are “just waiting to get blown up.”

July 27, 2006

As reported in the Washington Post,  “Bush plans to deploy more troops in Baghdad, U.S. soldiers who have been patrolling the capital for months describe a deadly and infuriating mission in which the enemy is elusive and success hard to find”.   Many soldiers interviewed by the Post  say they have grown increasingly disillusioned about their ability to quell the violence and their reason for fighting. One soldier the Post reports said,  “It sucks. Honestly, it just feels like we’re driving around waiting to get blown up. That’s the most honest answer I could give you.”

Another Soldier said, “No one wants to be here, you know, no one is truly enthused about what we do,” said Sgt. Christopher Dugger, the squad leader. “We were excited, but then it just wears on you — there’s only so much you can take. Like me, personally, I want to fight in a war like World War II. I want to fight an enemy. And this, out here,” he said, motioning around the scorched sand-and-gravel base, the rows of Humvees and barracks, toward the trash-strewn streets of Baghdad outside, “there is no enemy, it’s a faceless enemy. He’s out there, but he’s hiding.”

African-American Political Pundit says: I only wish Bush, his Defense (War) Secretary, his Republican supporters and the gutless National Democratic Party leaders would read the Post Article, Read Here, as I’m sure the majority of troops feel the same way. There “just waiting to get blown up”. But who reallty cares in Washington, Just keep on giving up the Billions of Tax Payer money and American life. Is anyone watching?

Condi for President

July 26, 2006

African-American Political Pundit says: Skeptical Brotha is “no joke” regarding his opinion. Check out his opinion about Condoleezza Rice and her chance to be U.S. President below or at his blog:skeptical brotha

Rice joins the EU in condemning Iran's defiance of international protocol and demands Tehran halt its uranium enrichment in January 2006

Whoever believes in this fantasy really needs to see a shrink, pronto. Or, more likely, rehab. The Republican Party will never turn to a black woman no matter what her qualifications or ideology may be. Let me qualify that by saying emphatically that I didn’t mean to imply that Condoleezza is qualified. She Ain’t. I am just a little exasperated by the right wing cheering squad for the GOP stable of sycophantic Negroes. Condoleezza’s detestable domestic politics and international war crimes are enough of a disqualifier. Being a handkerchief head Negress is just the icing on the cake. Condi will never be President. Don’t wish for it. God help us if her narrow behind ever alights in the Oval Office.
